There are three modes of navigation – perspectives, linear and glossary. • The perspectives mode presents a number of contrasting viewpoints on specific topic areas. • The linear mode enables you to work through the contents of the whole module in a systematic way, from beginning to end. • The glossary mode enables you to look up key words, and track into the main segments of the module where those words are used. First, go into the perspectives mode. In module three this presents the views of an industrialist, an environmentalist, a senior citizen and a civil servant on four different topic areas – energy, air, waste, and water. select the perspectives icon Choose your topic area: select ‘waste’ Choose a viewpoint: select ‘senior citizen’ icon Watch the video, and listen: select the play button You can switch viewpoints or topics very easily: choose industrialist, and press play, a further short chunk of video plays You can follow up any of the key points, for example point 3 here: choose point 3, next screen appears You will get a short synopsis for that point on the left, and a list of relevant segments on the right. You can choose to follow up any of these segments, for example segment 1.1.1 The fourth revolution. choose segment 1.1.1, next screen appears In this segment, a description of the great revolutions is given detailing the transformation of the relationship between humans and their environment. Animated diagrams convey specific processes and principles. play the animation in figure i. There are over five hundred photographs in the module. Turn the page using the tab in the bottom right corner of the left hand pad. There are definitions of key words. Turn to page 4. hold down the key word ‘industrial revolution’, pop-up definition appears There are questions so that you can test your understanding of the materials click on questions and answers, and then on answer, and then return to the segment. If you need help at any time, simply press the help button. click on help icon, help bubbles appear. You can return to the video, and select a different key point and follow that up. click on VT icon, waste video and industrialist key points appear But instead of doing that now, choose a different mode of navigation altogether. click on ‘select mode’, mode screen appears. The linear mode enables you to work through the core content of the module in a systematic way, from beginning to end. click on linear mode icon Select your chosen section – let’s look at section 2. click on section 2 And your chosen subsection click on section 2.5 And your chosen segment click on segment 2.5.3 As before, the information is presented via photos, diagrams and texts turn the pages, explore the figures and play the animation on page 5. You can jump across to the glossary to follow up any of the key points, and see where else in the module they appear. click glossary crab, select ‘wastewater’ definition appears (straight away). For example, ‘wastewater’ is also referred to in segment 4.4.1, 4.4.2, and 7.2.3 and we can access this directly from the glossary. click on item 4.4.2 in the glossary listing. Segment 4.4.2 appears. Page through (quite quickly) There are almost one hundred segments in the module, each easily accessible from the menu panel on the right. You can see a complete listing of all the contents, and access any of the sections directly from the linear mode. Click on the ‘Contents’ lozenge at the foot of the screen and scroll through the listing of the contents. Click on exit contents. Click on select mode lozenge.
